Resident Education and Teaching Awards

Geisinger resident, alumni and faculty dinner

Educational Philosophy

I am passionate about training the next generation of surgeons because it seems like we aren’t keeping up with the demand for these procedures in the Central Pennsylvania region. This leaves patients suffering with serious problems that are fixable, but require expertise. Many surgeons who do primary hip and knee replacement aren’t trained to diagnose and treat complications of these procedures.

I believe in one on one mentorship and milestone oriented graduated experience is the best way to educate surgeons. In addition to training you, my goal is that we become lifelong professional friends who enjoy catching up at AAHKS and other national meetings. One of the most fulfilling parts of teaching is when people text me their first case as an attending thanking me for their education. Similarly, one of the greatest compliments I get is when former partners, residents, or other colleagues call me to ask for advice on how to handle difficult problems.

Adult Reconstruction Fellowship

Serve and train surgeons to have the expertise to help patients with the most complex problems that we face today, while also developing mastery of minimally invasive techniques for outpatient surgery candidates.

Geisinger’s Adult Reconstruction Fellowship offers extensive experience in revision hip and knee arthroplasty, complex primary arthroplasty and high-risk primary arthroplasty while also providing experience with innovations in primary arthroplasty like minimally invasive surgery and robotic arthroplasty surgery. This fellowship experience is ideal for young surgeons who will be expected to handle challenging cases at tertiary care centers or for surgeons who have previously completed adult reconstruction fellowships which did not satisfy the candidate in terms of the revision experience.

The adult reconstruction section consists of three fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons who meet in a weekly preoperative conference. There is a robust didactic lecture series for the residents, cadaver lab and time allotted for CME. The fellow would also participate in a monthly case review with infectious disease, microbiology and pathology to review cases regarding periprosthetic infection.

Clinical Fellowship Testimonials

Dr. Maish was a cornerstone for my training in orthopaedic surgery. Being on his service as a second year resident was a large part of my decision to go into arthroplasty and directed my research interests in infection. My experience working with him as a chief resident became central for my training to excel in fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard. As a fellow on call, my success was based on what I had learned operating in his OR. He was completely dedicated to improving my knowledge base and surgical technique. He set up cadaver labs and lectures to refine my skill set. As a second year resident, I started to call him the ‘editor’, because the revision case load with him was exceptional. He fixed everything and anything. The largest thing I walked away from my rotations with him was his complete dedication to the patient and obsession with constant improvement. I am very fortunate to have worked with him as he is an important mentor and friend.

Let me start with a one-word description of the rotation. AMAZING! I can say with confidence that my training and experiences wouldn’t have been the same without that rotation. He is a great lecturer and teacher. He has an abundance of knowledge and experience which he shares both during surgery, work and times spent outside of work. He will teach you things beyond medicine and joint replacement. He not only becomes a mentor but a friend. He is a guy who I continue to text or call when I have a difficult case or a problem. He answers me without judgement and helps me mature my thought process and is understanding of my different evolving beliefs in joint replacement surgery. In the operating room he will push you to be the best version of yourself and hone your skills to be the best surgeon possible. You will do a lot of hands on learning with the idea that you are equally invested in the patients care and outcomes. His expectation is for the trainee to own the service, which can be demanding however, from my experience in practice it has prepared me well to manage my own patients. One of the biggest things I have taken away from his service is you will continue to learn throughout your career and my experience with Dr. Maish has provided me with the foundation to attack any complex joint case with confidence. I strongly recommend him as a fellowship mentor.

Dr. Maish was my adult reconstruction attending during residency. Before starting my rotation, I knew that I wanted to pursue a joints fellowship and was hopeful to get a good experience. By the end of my rotation, I was doing a large majority of the complex revision cases. In fact, much of the way I still practice today is a result of what I learned from that rotation. For me, Dr. Maish was a dedicated educator and is now a close friend. I highly recommend the opportunity to work with him. To this day, I still request his advice on my more challenging cases.
