Computer-Assisted Knee Replacement with ROSA and OptimiZe

What is ROSA®?

ROSA stands for Robotic Surgical Assistant. It is a knee replacement technology designed to help your surgeon tailor the placement of your knee implant to you. ROSA does not operate on its own. Dr. Maish performs your surgery, and the system assists him.

Before surgery: a plan for your knee

A set of X-rays may be used to create a 3D model of your knee. That model lets Dr. Maish plan many specifics of your knee replacement before you ever reach the operating room. The system can also be used without pre-operative imaging, building the plan from landmarks on your bone during surgery.

During surgery: real-time information

  • Trackers tell the system exactly where your knee is in space, even if your leg moves.
  • Real-time data show Dr. Maish how your bones and soft tissues (your ligaments) are balanced as your knee bends and straightens.
  • The robotic arm holds the cutting guide in the planned position. Dr. Maish makes the cuts.
  • The plan can be adjusted during surgery based on what your knee shows.

This helps ensure that the plan Dr. Maish put in place is carried out as intended.

What OptimiZe™ adds

ROSA Knee with OptimiZe is the enhanced version of the system. It adds tools in five areas:

  • Planning: implant positioning customized to the surgeon’s philosophy and your anatomy.
  • Landmarking: less variability in the reference points taken from your bone.
  • Tracking: bone cuts can be made without pinning the cutting guide to the bone.
  • Kinematic alignment: automated planning aimed at restoring your knee’s position before arthritis.
  • Experience: a workflow and display set up the way your surgeon works.

How Dr. Maish uses it

For knee replacement, Dr. Maish combines computer-assisted surgery in the ROSA robotic system with a highly personalized approach to reconstruction. Rather than treating every knee identically, his philosophy incorporates personalized alignment and personalized implant selection, using technology to help execute the surgical plan with precision while allowing the surgeon to make decisions based on the individual patient’s anatomy and natural mechanics.

The measurements recorded during your surgery can then be compared with how you recover. See ZBEdge Analytics.

Important information

Not all patients are candidates for this product and/or procedure. Only a medical professional can determine the treatment appropriate for your specific condition. Recovery time varies. Talk to your surgeon about whether joint replacement is right for you and the risks of the procedure, including the risk of implant wear, infection, loosening, breakage or failure, any of which could require additional surgery.
